On-campus jobs Tips

International Student: How I Landed an On-Campus Job in 2 Months!

Introduction

As an international student, getting a job on campus was a major way to enable me to live in the country while pursuing my studies abroad. The job market can be tough, especially for international students like me who, of course, are always victims of further difficulties and restrictions. I was really surprised to get a job at Webster University within two months of arrival here.

Reflecting upon this experience, I think there were maybe a few contributing factors to its huge success:

1. Mindset: Be Determined and Proactive

Before stepping onto campus, I had already made up my mind about the job search on campus. While I could not send in applications in advance for any posts, I kept the goal always before me and kept my attitude proactive in that sense to not lose my way when things turned indefinite.

2) Tailor-made Applications: Quality Over Quantity

While sending out job applications, I made sure that quality superseded quantity. My resume would be tailored for each position, and I would highlight only those skills and experiences that could be related to the description of a position. Other than this, I only applied to those jobs for which I felt genuinely interested, so it was not at all difficult to demonstrate my interest while applying for the same.

3) Networking: Building Relationships and Gaining Insights

Notably, networking was very important in the job search. I contacted those who had been in jobs similar to mine and asked them about their experiences and advice. The contacts gave me quite a great deal of insight into the jobs and the hiring process, thereby helping me better prepare for the interviews.

4) Preparation: Research and Practice

Another critical factor was proper preparation. I researched each position I applied for and their related responsibilities and requirements. I also diligently practiced how to respond during the interviews, using the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. This would help me to answer correctly and effectively highlight my skills and experiences to the potential employer.

5) Bonus Tip: Showing Passion and Enthusiasm

Besides the relevant skills, what most employers look for in applicants is the expression of passion and interest in the role. I had to express that genuine excitement about a position and confidence in my ability to contribute. That interest did not help only in showing interest, but also marked me as a candidate genuinely interested in the job.

Conclusion

Getting an on-campus job was one of the biggest things that ever happened to me as an international student. This meant not only ease in my finances but also gave work experience and chances to network within the college universe. If you’re an international student looking for on-campus employment, I hope maybe my experience and tips can offer some guidance and encouragement. With determination, preparation, and a positive attitude, you can achieve all your goals and make the most of your time abroad.
